Buncombe Turnpike
by: Timothy Jones
Everyone loves a good story.
That premise guides the music of North Carolina band Buncombe Turnpike. The group not only creates a fresh sound rooted in the Carolina mountains that members call home, they also like—in concert or recordings—to tell about what they’ve seen and heard. Interest in the stories behind their songs also holds for their occasional gospel numbers, included in every concert and on each of the group’s CDs.
Says Tom Godleski, one of the band’s founding members and vocalists, as well as its bass player and occasional songwriter, “I have an interest in how songs came about, whether I’m taking in a concert or playing a gig—and whether the music is gospel or secular. I think a lot of people want to hear how a song had its origin.”
