Among
banjo players, Terry Baucom’s precision and tone are legendary.
His name appears time and time again alongside some of bluegrass music’s
greatest performers. Dubbed “Mr. Drive” by Doyle Lawson, Terry
has been a founding member of numerous groundbreaking groups, including
Boone Creek, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, and IIIrd Tyme Out. In between
band stints, Terry often returns to his roots in Monroe, North Carolina,
where he retools by teaching banjo and playing pick-up gigs until the
next opportunity to pick in a great group unveils itself.
“Most of the time, the good gigs find you,” shares Terry when asked how he has ended up in so many superb bands. A case in point is when Doyle Lawson called last summer wondering if Terry would be interested in returning to the group he helped found in 1979. “You’re my first choice, don’t answer me now,” said Doyle. Terry gave it some thought and rejoined the group at the end of August. In doing so, Terry was again performing with one of the hottest tickets in bluegrass. The current lineup of Quicksilver includes Jamie Dailey on guitar and vocals, Barry Scott on bass and vocals, and J. W. Stockman on fiddle. Aside from Terry, the current crop of players has been with Doyle for several years and forms one of the tightest units working today. |
